Angels of Mercy Documentary on Newstalk

The premiere of ‘Angels of Mercy’ will go to air on Documentary on Newstalk Radio March 14 and again March 20 2021.

It’s the story of the women who left Ireland to train and work as nurses in England across the 2nd half of the 20th Century and were an often overlooked but important element in the development of the UK National Health Service.

The story is told through the experiences of 5 Irish women of different generations who made their careers in Nursing in England between 1950 – 1980  In addition historians Professor Louise Ryan, Professor Jennifer Redmond and Dr Sarah O’Brien give context to the women’s narrative.

Michael Lyne: An Island man all his life, tells us his memories of the transatlantic cable workers that came from all over the world to Valentia. The Island has a rich tradition of welcoming visitors all year round and the people of Valentia always welcome their visitors with open arms.

Molly Gallivans: –  featuring proprietor Stephen O’Sullivan and his wife Frances. Molly Gallivan’s Old Cottage and Farm, once a dream and now a reality, preserves some of Ireland’s unique and rich heritage and traditions

Kathy Fitzgerald: Proprietor of Tig a Cúinne pub, share her love for her home, her pub and her community of Brandon, West Kerry ‘Tig A Cúinne’ has been in her family since the late 1700’s. Only serving drinks, Tig A Cúinne is in essence what a rural pub here in Kerry

Noel Keane: Proprietor. Croí Restaurant, Tralee. First opening their doors in May 2017, the plan was simple; to make people feel like they are at home.  Producing amazing local food, supplying good wine and beer, while providing excellent service.
